The Premier League is often considered to be one of the most competitive football leagues in the world. As such, it comes as no surprise that it has witnessed its fair share of talented players from around the globe. Denmark is a country that is proud of its rich footballing history – and has produced some spectacular talent throughout the years. It has also contributed its fair share of stars to the English top flight over the years.
Whilst there have been many – and you may feel that we have unfairly missed a player, we will take a look at some of the best Danish football players that we believe have ever graced the Premier League.
Peter Schmeichel
Clubs: Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Manchester City
Premier League Titles: 5 (all with Manchester United)
There is no doubt that Peter Schmeichel is arguably the most iconic Danish footballer to have ever played in the Premier League – in one of the most iconic clubs in the world. This Great Dane was the man who was always solid in goal when Man U always topped the Premier League winner odds. He was the safe hands that guided his team to many a victory.
The legendary goalkeeper became an integral part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s successful side and he won five Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford and is unsurprisingly fondly remembered by fans for his commanding presence protecting his net.
Christian Eriksen
Clubs: Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan
Premier League Achievements: PFA Team of the Year (2017-18), Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Year (2013-14)
As well as being a survivor, Christian Eriksen has become famed for his incredible passing ability and vision. He has spread his talent around some of the best leagues in the world. However, during his time at Tottenham Hotspur, he established himself as one of the Premier League’s top midfielders, known for his knack for scoring crucial goals and providing assists, just when it was needed the most – making him a fan favourite.
Thomas Gravesen
Clubs: Everton, Real Madrid (via transfer from Everton)
Premier League Achievements: None
Thomas Gravesen was known as a hardworking midfielder who made a name for himself at Everton. Although he may not have actually won any Premier League titles during his time here, his tenacity and work rate in midfield earned him respect among fans and players alike. So good was he that he caught the eye of Real Madrid, which is certainly a testament to his abilities.
Daniel Agger
Club: Liverpool
Premier League Achievements: None
Daniel Agger was a reliable defender who spent pretty much all of his footballing career with the Premier League giants, Liverpool. Known for his steady composure on the ball and impressive ability to read the game, during his time with the club he became a key figure in the squad’s defence. Unfortunately, he just happened to be at the club when they were never quite able to grab a Premier League win but, despite this, he remains a beloved figure among Liverpool supporters.
Jon Dahl Tomasson
Club: Newcastle United
Premier League Achievements: None
Jon Dahl Tomasson had but a brief stint in the Premier League with Newcastle United. However, although his time in England was comparatively short, he still made quite an impact with his remarkable goal-scoring ability. Unsurprisingly, he went on to have a successful international career with Denmark.
Jan Mølby
Club: Liverpool
Premier League Achievements: 3rd place (1993-94, 1994-95)
Another Danish Liverpool player, Mølby was a midfielder who played a huge role for Liverpool in the early years of the Premier League. Although he may not have ever actually won the league title, his technical ability and eye for a pass made him a key player in Liverpool’s midfield.
Michael Laudrup
Clubs: Lazio (briefly), Chelsea, Vissel Kobe
Premier League Achievements: Football League Cup (League Cup) with Chelsea (1998)
Michael Laudrup, a Danish footballing legend, had only a brief spell in the Premier League with Chelsea. Although his time in the Premier League may have been relatively short, he played a big part in Chelsea’s League Cup victory in 1998.
